In 1983, armed with family recipes and an idea, Ed and Jane O'Brien and Jane's mother, Marge Miller, opened the first Cookies & More. Located in the Old Capitol Mall, the store was (and still is) in the heart of the University of Iowa campus in downtown Iowa City.

On opening day, they had no idea that their cookies would become an Iowa City favorite and that more than 40 years later, their son and his family would be carrying on the tradition of making cookies from scratch. Today, Cookies & More is owned and operated by Alex O'Brien (Ed and Jane's son) and his wife, Angie O'Brien. Alex remembers helping his parents crack eggs at the store when he was 10 years old. He, along with his brother Jack and sister Sara, each had their stint of working in the store while in high school. After receiving his bachelor's degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Southwest Missouri State University, Alex returned to Iowa City to manage the cookie store along side his mother, Jane.
